BBC Work Experience - Episode V - 6th January, 2014

Last day in the studio!

My objectives this week remain the same as the previous, due to longer-than-usual break (Christmas can do that):

Elaine was my supervisor for the second time. I'm sad to say that she wasn't as helpful or co-operative as the last time I was with her. It might've been something I did or didn't do the last time (and yeah, in hindsight, I may have needed ask), but it felt like I was being treated as a newcomer (again). She frequently took control of the cameras despite the fact I was meant to be practicing with them. Every time I made a slight mistake (with framing, etc.), she took control to correct it, rather than asking me to do so; every time an instruction was given from the gallery, it felt like she thought only she had to do it. Despite the fact it put a dent or two in my confidence, it was as if she thought it was my first day. All I required was a refresher of what I already knew and then building further from it. Perhaps I should've been clearer as to what I wanted, but her apparent lack of confidence in me was rather confusing. After all, like I say, this was the second time she has been my supervisor. I really did feel like we were back to square one and felt like she was nowhere near as helpful as first time (or, indeed, as Roy).

After the 1pm broadcast drew to a close, Daryl dropped into the studio for a quick chat to see how things have been with me before lunch. Whilst I expressed my enthusiasm and gratitude for the work experience, I did raise my feelings of concern for the morning.
Daryl must have relayed something of my concern, because after lunch, Elaine seemed to be more helpful; she really started being responsive to my experience-building, by allowing me more pactice with the cameras. If not Daryl, then it may have been a change of pace, due to the after lunch session having more time to spare than the morning half-hour before broadcast. Whatever the reason, I was more pleased with the increased inclusiveness and left my final day at the studio feeling like I had some more confidence with the operations of the studio. However, I still felt like I had lots more to learn.
